Nas ordered to pay over a HALF MILLION to Kelis!; Spousal Support Debate

Kelis and Nas were back in Divorce Court yesterday to settle support issues and the results were not in favor of Nas.

Nas went to court Monday over his divorce with Kelis — and walked out a little lighter in the wallet. According to documents filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Nas had to immediately fork over $47,249.42 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support. The judge also ordered Nas to pay $10,000/month in spousal support until he pays off the $299,015.50 he owes Kelis.

Nas also has to pay 90% of Kelis’ legal fees in the amount of $155,787.28. Lastly, Nas has to pay $48,549.83 to cover Kelis’ accounting expenses.

The lesson, as always — when Laura Wasser reps your ex, settle as quickly as possible. Nas just learned that the hard way.

Is Nas being too stingy or is Kelis being to greedy? The argument can go either way. The issue of spousal support or alimony is such a sticky subject. Spousal support is given to the "lower wage" spouse after a marriage to help them maintain whatever life they were living during the length of the marriage. Some do not see this as being fair, while others see it as being a hand-out. The higher-wage spouse may see it as unfair, especially when the price is exceptionally high and takes away a lot of their income. The lower-wage spouse sees it as being, especially if they were a stay-at-home parent or a disabled individual. Spousal support is a very controversial subject when dealing with divorces.

Tip: Divorces are never easy. People may frown upon pre-nups, but having a system in place just in case you divorce is always a good plan. This goes for any marriage and not just celebrity marriage. Things can become ugly so fast during a divorce where no prior arrangement had been set up. We just hope these too cool it for the sake of their child.
