According to the New York Times, a Notre Dame recruit named Matt James died Friday at 6:30 pm after falling from a balcony of a hotel while on spring break. He was 17. He was a star offensive lineman of his football team and also a member of his basketball team. He was observed as being 'drunk and belligerent' before his fall. The toxicology results have yet to come in. This is a sad and tragic story.
We are not passing any judgement on the player nor those with him at the time. What could have been done to prevent this tragic death? Noting that he was a minor, what could have been done to prevent this? Why is our society so obsessed with excessive alcohol consumption? If you saw a friend who appeared to be belligerently drunk, what would you do? He was remembered as a gentle soul and fondly remembered by teammates and friends so we are assuming this was a suprise to all. Our prayers are with his family.
