Tyler Perry Media Mogul: Understanding an audience

CNN wrote this article about Tyler Perry and their take on is successes. It goes pretty deep into what his appeal is and what draws people to him. They say he is very consistent, and has a built in audience which makes him successful though his movies don't have much of an artistic merit. Despite that, Tyler Perry became the 30th most powerful celebrity in Hollywood and ranked 10th in earnings.

Often certain audiences are neglected when it comes to catering to them. Just think of all the other audiences that have not been tapped into with potential earning power including latino, asian, and even subcultures within those populations. People had this to say about Tyler's audience:

An audience -- predominately African-American, many of whom are the church-goers Hollywood thinks don't go to movies -- that was largely ignored by the industry until Perry came along, Rose pointed out.

The article fails to look at the message and themes behind Tyler's works and what makes his audiences so loyal:

I don't think he's accomplished something artistically that's going to make him of a greater interest to his wider audience...

We often forget that their are other people in the world and should always try and understand our differences and why something may appeal to somebody that doesn't necessarily appeal to you. This article displays some of the we all, at some time and point, cast of differnt cultures' behaviors and habits. Learning to understand differences will get us such a long way in America.
